Being a Parent at WMS PDF Print E-mail
Being a parent at WMS assumes both a major investment and a major commitment.   A WMS education extends well beyond the basics of literacy and numeracy into the social and spiritual aspects of life.  This applies to parents as well as children.  Children thrive when home and school work in harmony, with both environments sharing the same educational values and expectations.
What can parents and school expect of each other as we enter into a partnership to aid the development of your children?  This document aims to articulate expectations we agree on:  what parents can reasonably expect of the school and what the school will expect of parents.   It also aims to reduce the inevitable misunderstanding and disappointment that result when unstated expectations go unmet.

What can parents reasonably expect from the school?
•    What can I expect of the school academically?
•    What can I expect in terms of communication from the school?
•    What can I expect of the school environment?
•    What professional standards can I expect of the school and faculty?
•    What can I expect of the school administration?

What does the school expect from parents?
•    What is the school’s most basic expectation of parents?
•    What contribution can I make to create a positive school community?
•    How can I create consistency between home and school?
•    What are my responsibilities regarding communication between home and school?

Parent Handbook

2009-2010

Welcome

Welcome to Williamsburg Montessori School. This Handbook explains how the school operates and outlines our official policies. It also presents guidelines, suggestions, and answers to questions that may arise throughout the year. At WMS Parents are essential partners in our mission to “nurture the child’s spirit.” We rely on your wisdom and commitment in helping us create the unique community that is WMS. We deeply value your participation in every facet of your child’s development and we invite you to join us on this exciting educational journey.

Please regard the policies and procedures outlined in the following pages as a starting point on that journey. The real work takes place between teachers and students, parents and teachers, and between parents and children. We, in turn, welcome your input. If you are a returning parent, we are pleased to welcome you back. If you are new to the school, we look forward to getting to know you.

Best wishes for a peaceful year of joyful learning.

Ways to Give PDF Print E-mail

 Ways to Give to WMS

Cash Gifts

Writing a check to the Fund for WMS is the easiest way to make a gift.  Gifts of cash are fully deductible up to 50% of your adjusted gross income.  Many employers offer matching programs for charitable giving -- click here to see a list of companies.  if your company has a matching program, please enclose the form along with your check.

Stock Transfers

Because of the tax benefits, gifts of stock are often the most beneficial for donors.  Transferring appreciated securities directly to a non-profit can eliminate taxes on gains.  In addition, donors receive an income tax deduction for the full market value of the stock at the time of the gift. If you wish to make a gift of stock, please contact WMS at 757-565-0977 and we will provide detailed instructions on how to make the transfer.

A Gift from Your IRA

The Pension Protection Act allows donors age 70 1/2 or older to make contributions from their Individual Retirement Account without paying income tax.  The key provisions of this law -- which is set to expire on December 31, 2007 -- are as follows:

1. You may contribute up to $100,000 from your IRA to publicly supported charities like WMS in 2007.

2. The transfer must made directly to WMS from your IRA. You cannot withdraw funds and then write a check to the schol.

3. You must be 70 1/2 at the time of the gift.

4. You may not receive any benefits in exchange for the gift.

Your IRA administrator will need the following information about WMS in order to make the transfer:

1.  Our legal name is "Williamsburg Montessori School".

2.  We are a qualified charitable organization under the Pension Protection Act as described in Section 170(b)(1)(A) of the Internal Revenue Code.

3.  Our tax identification number is 54-1200609

4.  Our mailing address is:  Williamsburg Montessori School, 4200 Longhill Road, Williamsburg, Virginia  23188

Real Estate Gifts

Gifts of property can also enable donors to avoid sizable capital gains taxes.

Life Income Gifts

Establishing a "charitable remainder annuity trust" can be an excellent options for donors considering a major gift. Trusts of this kind allow an annual return of 5% or greater, which can be paid to you or a loved one for life, after which the assets would be distributed to WMS.

Planned Giving

Naming WMS in your will is another way of making the most of your gift.  The federal estate tax takes between 40% and 50% of one's estate at the time of death.  By making a charitable bequest, you avoid that tax while providing for th WMS.
