Williamsburg Montessori School is a vibrant community of learners, offering programs for Toddlers (18 months to three years), Children’s House students (3-6 year-olds) and Elementary students (6-12 year-olds). All of our programs feature multi-age, highly enriched learning environments guided by experienced adults trained in the Montessori method. The activities and environments provided by WMS are designed to stimulate a thirst for learning, an abiding curiosity about one's surroundings, and the desire and ability to work independently.
At WMS, we view education as preparation for life, which includes but is not limited to mastering intellectual skills. We ascribe to Dr. Montessori's belief that "The young child has one intuitive aim: his self-development. He wants to do and see for himself, through his own senses and not through the eyes of an adult. He becomes a full person. He is educated." After school programming is available for children between the ages of three and twelve. Summer Enrichment is also offered. |

The WMS Toddler Program provides an environment that meets the needs of children 18 months to 3 years of age. Entry into this environment begins gradually, with parent and child coming in together for short periods of time until the child (and parent) build trust in the teachers and the new environment. This "phasing-in" also supports the parent/child separation process which is a primary task of the toddler period of development. The toddler group of 10 children is staffed by a trained Montessori toddler teacher and an assistant.

Children between the ages of three and six learn by doing. It is a special kind of doing, carefully directed within a “prepared environment” full of beautiful materials that call to the child’s inherent desire to learn. The concrete materials allow children to explore the world through all their senses: and to develop the signal capacities that set the stage for all future learning: concentration, coordination, order, and independence. In the course of the three year developmental cycle, the child goes through an intense period of change, including the transition to cooperative play and more complex social interactions, a language explosion leading to beginning skills in writing and reading, the emergence of number sense and the foundations of math, and great changes in physical development. Carefully trained adults respond to these changes in social and emotional, cognitive, and physical development with appropriate lessons to support each child’s growth and emerging capabilities.

Learning how to be a meaningful participant in a complex and challenging world is the "big work" of Montessori education during the Elementary years. In a program based on the unique needs of children between the ages of six and twelve, WMS offers students the intellectual, social, and spiritual tools they need to flourish not just in school, but in life beyond school
The curriculum is both broad and deep, fully integrating rigorous academic study with practical work in an atmosphere that fosters social and emotional as well as intellectual development.
The Lower Elementary , located in the recently renovated Cundari House, serves two classrooms of children between the ages of six and nine. The Upper Elementary community is located at our satellite campus in downtown Williamsburg. |
