The Williamsburg Montessori is a non-for-profit organization governed by a volunteer board of directors, licensed by the State of Virginia and affiliated with the American Montessori Society. Since its founding in 1982, WMS has built a tradition of excellence by serving children using the educational philosophy of Maria Montessori. Since we first opened our doors in 1982, WMS has expanded from a modest program serving forty pre-school aged children to a comprehensive Montessori school located on two campuses and serving nearly 140 students between the ages of eighteen months and twelve years.

Williamsburg Montessori School provides a daily living and learning environment designed to help children grow socially, physically, and mentally in a structure governed by the educational philosophy developed by Maria Montessori. We aim to develop in each child the ability to solve problems, to use freedom wisely, to respect him/herself, and above all, to take joy in learning. |

Since it was first introduced in 1907, the method has managed to grow in both size and scope — Montessori schools exist in nearly every country on earth with over 5000 in the US alone — while retaining core elements central to children's healthy development. Montessori education is unique in its careful focus on the child as a developing human being and the method is distinguished by three interconnected characteristics.
